What do I know about YA?

Author: Jax Cassidy // Category:
Nothing really.

All I recall of YA is sneaking around Judy Blume books in middle school and hiding in the closet with a flashlight to read. Now that I'm branching off and writing something my nieces can read, it's a whole different ballgame. I'm tired of YA turning into mini versions of adult romance. I miss the innocence of first crushes, first kiss, falling in 'puppy' love... all those things have long been swapped out by Gossip Girls, The Clique and a bunch of other YA readings that glorizes these groups of young girls who can be quite mean. What happened to Sweet Valley High or the Lakeside High Experiment? I want to get back to the wholesomeness of youth..and as I see these tv stations and movies focusing on sex as a selling point, it saddens me. I'm no prude by any means, but I feel like children should be children. In this day and age sex is prevalent in everything and I know that there are many authors like myself who want to 'regress' by writing stories that are lest evocative and more fun reading. I am not condemning authors who are moving into a more aggressive teenage YA direction because of what their publishing house wants, but I think that we are the influences on these kids, whether good or bad, and if we continue the trend of believing it's all right to push the envelope to such a young readership...it's our own fault when they are morally corrupt. We only have ourselves to blame. This is only my opinion...but that's why I'm trying to make a difference. My publisher is awesome because they agree with the direction I'm wanting for the YA line and it makes me proud to write for a company that believes in family values and morals. I miss those days when children respected their elders and everything they did was considered innocent. Now, we have to question all these children's motives and wonder if they are going to be corrupt mini versions of adults....it just depresses me. Why are we rushing our children to grow up so fast?

Contrary to what anybody says, being an author is wonderful, exhilarating, and PAINFUL at times. I love love my stories and love creating something romantic and beautiful for my readers, but when you are forced to face deadlines, everything becomes a bit hazy... I really enjoyed writing this novel and I tried to make it as passionate as possible. I hope that when it's released that you'll love it too.

Thank you Candace Havens for pushing me to do Fast Draft. If you hadn't kicked my butt I would never have made it. Okay, so I'm a week behind my 2nd extension, but it happens. Life happens and I did it, that's all that matters. The accomplishment is in seeing the final print in your hand. To smell the freshly printed copies, be able to put it on your shelf and know that you wrote it all by yourself. A true milestone.

Be good to our Earth...

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

I'm big on helping the environment when I can..even if it's not much, I do my part. I drive a Prius (which I totally love!), I pick up trash when someone misses the trashcan, I recycle, I don't try to waste paper and I am all about getting a "green" (Eco-friendly) home someday. My previous company, Gensler, was a big advocate of sustainable design and applied it to all their projects. Thanks to them, I learned something valuable and will take that knowledge with me for years to come.

You think you can't help? Think again. There are little things that we can do that will help out.. My girlfriend owns a site called Green Is Sexy and it tells you different ways to save the planet. If everyone can do just one of those things, it will make a difference! You might not think so but the planet will love you for it....

Quick Fix

I don't know why but I really want to see this movie! Who can resist Jet Li and Jackie Chan? They're adorable! I grew up on their movies as a child. before they made a name for themselves in American cinemas. It's interesting that they have become a household name and I think deservedly so. Humor is the best medicine and these days, I NEED IT!

I'm so close to finishing my manuscript that I can taste it. Sigh. When I do, I'm treating myself for dinner and a movie! I would say 'spa' but that will be when I get my NY contract :)

How can I function sleeping at 4:00 AM almost every night and waking up soooo very early? I don't know, but there is this strength inside of me that tells me to keep going, that it will all be worth it soon.

I hope so because sometimes it hard to believe. Especially when the tunnel I'm traveling through seems to show no sign of the light at the end....but I keep going.

YouTube Obsession....

I sometimes get stuck. It's a natural thing, all writers get to a point and then ..BAM.. nothing. So what do I like to do? I go onto YouTube and find music videos. Wow, I didn't realize how many incredibly talented people there are in the world. The only thing I'd be able to offer YouTube is ... NOTHING... I can't sing or play an instrument worth crap. I wonder how many people get recording deals... anyways, I love Death Cab for Cutie and this song I Will Follow You Into the Dark is so beautiful that I had to post it. Of course, the original song is used for this particular illustrators version... it's really sweet.... shhh.. be werry quiet, I'm huntin' wabbits...

My BAAAAAD...

I'm on deadline. As usual.

I'm not trying to be neglectful. I promise.

Now, I have to tell you, I wasn't a big fan of Jason Castro on AI but he blew me away with this song. It's definitely on my soundtrack for my next book. His voice is just amazing....

Yes, it's true! I'm the AOTM for April and I'm going to talk about Understanding and Breaking into the Multi-Ethnic Market. My very special guest is Simone Harlow who is also featured in the LOTUS BLOSSOM CHRONICLES anthology with me.

It's going to be FUN! I can guarantee lots of laughter.

You should also read the Author Interview. Maybe it'll give you a little bit of insight into the mind of this particular writer :)

Don't be shy, spread the word.

God Inc

A year or so ago, Eden showed me this great youtube show called God Inc. It was brilliant and now it's been picked up by the Sci-Fi channel and I'm curious to know what becomes of it. Here's the first episode. Some episodes aren't as funny but overall it keeps a person entertained about working for the "Man".

I've been Marked!

Author: Jax Cassidy // Category: , , ,
I just got back from Dallas after participating in a great conference organized by DARA. It was a much needed trip and now I feel re-energized and ready to tackle my deadlines. I had a blast seeing old friends and making new ones. The book signing turned out better than I'd hoped and was able to donate to a worthy cause. Thanks everyone who purchased my book! I even had time to attend some actual workshops! The best part of the event was running into my pal Candace Havens, who coincidentally has a new book out called LIKE A CHARM! Then, of course, I got to see my friend Gena Showalter, who mistook me for a fan. LOL -- Of course, she should feel priviledge that I allowed her to autograph my chest! I'll get you back Gena! I left the conference feeling inspired after listening to Kresley Cole and Lori Foster. These women are fabulous and their speeches gave me the extra boost to get through my deadlines and to work toward a new goal!

In Memory...

Author: Jax Cassidy // Category:
Last night a dear friend of mine passed away of cancer. He had been in ICU for 45 days and fought hard to to kick this thing. The last time I got to see him was in late January and the last good memory I have of him. We often went out for drinks with another girlfriend. He was charming and an outrageous flirt, when I was divorced he would always tease me about sweeping me off my feet and being my sugar daddy. I always thought it was the sweetest thing. He was one of the most amazing people you'd ever meet. He had a kind heart and a warm sense of humor. When he laughed, it was rich and smoky. He did so many wonderful things for charity and his greatest love was an organization called New Directions,
an organization that helped the Veterans and the Homeless. He dedicated his life to this cause and he was proud to be a part of this. Although I'm devastated by his loss, I think that those around him have been blessed to have met him. I am. He showed me how to relax and go with the flow. He showed me that life should be filled with happiness and worth living to the fullest. I loved every minute of knowing him and I know that wherever he is, he will continue to spread his vibrant personality and loving heart.

C.R. You will always be loved and remembered.
